The U.S. government's free trade policy has been a disaster for American workers and for working people in other countries. Three million jobs have been lost due to free trade since 1994. Seven hundred thousand jobs have been lost due to NAFTA alone. Besides taking our jobs, these policies allow corporations to end run our constitution and attack our labor, environmental and food safety laws in secret tribunals all in the name of higher profits.

The FTAA will open the door for foreign corporations to force the privatization of our country's public sector, as well as, attacking prevailing wage laws and project labor agreements in the construction industry. This assault on workers, the environment and our public sector must end.

The Bush Administration, however, is trying to expand this free trade disaster. They want to expand NAFTA to the entire Western hemisphere. This proposed trade agreement is called the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) and trade ministers from these 34 countries will meet in Miami, November 20-21, 2003 to negotiate this agreement. Join people from across the world in saying, "No to the FTAA!"

The Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment has joined together with Districts 11 and 7 of the United Steel Workers of America to organize a "March to Miami" which begins in Seattle September 26-27. The March moves across the country for the next seven weeks to show the effects of free trade in our communities and to protest this effort to expand NAFTA. We'll arrive in Miami for workshops and massive protests the week of November 17 to 21.

The March to Miami is a series of educational forums, protest marches, and press briefings. We begin in Seattle because this was the site of the historic protest against the World Trade Organization that brought this disastrous free trade policy to the attention of the world. The March's main route moves from the Northwest to the Midwest, but we encourage all U.S. communities to organize March to Miami events from late September to mid-November and to join us in Miami. All roads lead to Miami.

Since our call to join the March, a diverse coalition of local and regional organizations has agreed to help us plan local events: The Washington State Labor Council, the Oregon Public Employees Union SEIU 503, the Washington Education Association, the Montana Community Labor Alliance, the North Dakota Farmers Union, the Minnesota SEIU State Council and the Kansas City Fair Trade Campaign, to name just a few. You can learn more about the FTAA on the Global Trade Working Group page of this site.

If you want to participate in a March to Miami event in your community, please contact the Alliance's Dan Leahy at (360) 709-9324, (360) 402-0441 or leahyd@evergreen.edu or District 11's Tara Widner at (612) 623-8003 or twidner@uswa.org.
