ASJEs principle program is called "Restoration Economy," formerly known as the North Coast Restoration Jobs Initiative (NCRJI). It is dedicated to forwarding "restoration economies" that provide stable, family-wage employment with benefits to workers while restoring our degraded environments. We believe this approach to forest and watershed restoration is a sustainable alternative to the practices of the extractive resource industries, which have historically undervalued workers and severely harmed our natural environment.
Our current focus is to bring workers and environmentalists together on the North Coast of California to pursue opportunities for high quality jobs in forest, fisheries, and watershed restoration. We are currently developing a template to forward restoration economies in rural communities throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Taking the High-Skill, Living Wage Approach to Restoration
Restoration work needs to be done by a highly skilled and well-paid workforce. A well-paid and experienced workforce will not only result in higher quality restoration work; but our families, local communities and quality of life will all grow stronger as well.
Making the North Coast an Even Better Place to Live
ASJE recognizes that we enjoy living on the North Coast because of the special quality of life and local culture that exist in this region. By nurturing a local restoration economy, we believe our communities will flourish, our workers will be truly valued, our streams and rivers will again be abundant with salmon, and our treasured forests and watersheds will heal from a century of unsustainable resource extraction practices and policies.
Researching the Possibilities for Restoration Jobs
Partnering with local organizations, ASJE conducts research to characterize the scope and structure of the local restoration economy on the North Coast to provide greater understanding of restoration in the local economic base and workforce. (more on reports and manuals).
Pursuing Innovative Policy Solutions
Watershed restoration faces multiple policy-level barriers such as permitting obstacles, funding constraints, and a severely short work window each year. By bringing more attention to watershed restoration in Northern California at the county and state level, ASJE supports innovative policy solutions that allow high quality watershed restoration to be successful in our communities.
